Tunbridge Wells Borough Council is holding a series of public events throughout March 2026 to explain proposed changes to how local councils are run in Kent. These sessions aim to help residents in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, understand plans that could see current local councils replaced by new, larger organisations that manage all local services.

Residents can join online sessions on Wednesday 4 March 2026 at 3pm and 6pm. In-person meetings hosted by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council will also take place at Royal Victoria Place on 7 March, Cranbrook Co-Op on 14 March, and Paddock Wood Waitrose on 21 March. These events allow the community to ask questions and find out how the plans might affect council tax and local representation.

The proposed changes involve moving away from the current system of 14 different councils to a smaller number of single authorities. One plan being considered would see Tunbridge Wells joined with Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Malling, and Maidstone to form a West Kent council. According to Kent Council Leaders, this reorganising of local government is intended to simplify services and provide local leaders with more powers over housing and transport.

A government consultation on the future of Kent’s councils is already underway and is set to close on 26 March 2026. A final decision is expected from the government in July 2026, with any new council structures expected to be fully operational by April 2028.
