Healthwatch Essex has launched a consultation in Basildon, Essex, to find out how a new tool is helping young people who have experienced trauma. The project asks for feedback on the Young Person’s Trauma Keyring, which is a small keyring designed to help survivors tell doctors, teachers, or care workers what they need without having to speak during stressful moments.

The evaluation is being run alongside the University of Essex and is looking for people aged between 18 and 25 to take part in the study. Healthcare professionals, including GPs, nurses, and psychologists who have used or seen the keyring, are also being asked to share their experiences since the tool was first introduced in September 2025.

Young people who helped create the keyring specifically chose a physical format rather than a mobile phone app to avoid the stress often linked to digital devices. Those who participate in the 90-minute online interviews will receive a £15 gift voucher as a thank you for their time and contribution to the research.

The feedback gathered before the closing date of 30 June 2026 will be used to improve how local health and school staff support young people in the community. This initiative follows the success of a similar project for adults which received a national award in March 2024 for its impact on trauma-informed care.
