A 28-year-old man has been banned from attending any football matches for three years after he ran onto the pitch and headbutted a steward during a game in Reading, Berkshire. The incident took place on 24 January 2026 during a match between Reading FC and Barnsley FC at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Brandon Bashforth, from Barnsley, admitted to attacking a steward, entering the playing area, and using threatening behaviour. The court heard that Bashforth ran onto the grass and hit a member of the security staff while trying to reach the section where the home fans were sitting. He was arrested following the match and appeared at Reading Magistrates’ Court to face the charges.

Reading Magistrates’ Court ordered Bashforth to pay a total of £1,265 in fines and compensation. This amount includes a £600 fine for the assault and £200 to be paid directly to the steward he attacked. He was also fined £100 for going onto the pitch, along with court costs and a victim surcharge.

Thames Valley Police confirmed that the three-year banning order will prevent Bashforth from going to any regulated football match in the UK. PC Steve Mountain, a dedicated football officer, said that violence toward staff will not be tolerated and noted that the ban also stops the 28-year-old from travelling to international fixtures.

Another man, 25-year-old Reilly Wood from Bournemouth, was also charged in connection with the same match for entering the pitch and causing criminal damage. Police said these measures are used to protect players and fans who follow the rules while attending sporting events in the community.
