Matthew Haylett, 33, from Reading, Berkshire, has been charged with five driving offences after a collision that left a child with potentially life-changing injuries. The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday 26 February 2026 on Rushey Way in Earley.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the charges include causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Haylett is also accused of driving without a valid licence, having no insurance, and failing to report the crash.

The child involved in the crash remains in hospital for medical treatment. Police investigators, led by Sergeant Matt Cadmore, are still gathering evidence and have asked local residents for any CCTV or dashcam footage from the area to help the case.

After being charged on Monday 02 March 2026, Haylett was kept in custody by officers. He is now expected to appear at Reading Crown Court as the case moves forward.
