Swindon Borough Council has installed the first of five new number plate cameras on Okus Road in Swindon, Wiltshire, as part of a 12-month trial to catch speeding drivers. This pilot project began on 2 March 2026 and aims to make local streets and school commutes safer for children and residents.

The cameras use technology that automatically scans the number plates of vehicles to monitor their speed through residential areas. In addition to Okus Road, the council will set up these cameras at Akers Way, Grange Drive, Croft Road, and Homington Avenue.

Drivers caught going over the speed limit will initially receive warning letters rather than fines, though the council will share their information with the police. Later this year, the cameras may also be used to check if vehicles have valid insurance, road tax, and MOT certificates.

This initiative is part of a wider programme to improve safety after local pupils reported feeling unsafe during their journeys to school. If the pilot successfully reduces speeds over the next year, the council intends to bring the technology to other busy areas in the community.
