A new Italian restaurant called Social Osteria is opening at the Weir Mill development in Stockport, Greater Manchester, in Spring 2026. The tavern-style eatery will be the first independent business to move into the landmark site as part of a major town centre transformation.
The 2,000 square foot restaurant will be located in the East Mill building and will feature historic details like exposed brickwork and an original kiln. It is the latest project from the team behind The Social Trattoria, which was named Officially the UK’s Best Trattoria at the 2025 Italian Awards UK.
The restaurant is part of a 60 million pound redevelopment by Capital&Centric that is turning the former cotton mill into a new neighbourhood. Located under the town’s railway viaduct, the project will provide 253 rental apartments and a range of outdoor dining areas overlooking the River Mersey.
According to the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, the residential part of the mill is expected to be finished by Summer 2026. This comes as data from the Office for National Statistics shows that private rents in the area reached an average of 1,084 pounds in January 2026.
