Watford residents have until 26 March 2026 to share their views on major plans that could change how their local services are run across Hertfordshire. The government is currently asking for feedback on proposals to replace the existing system of county and district councils with a smaller number of single authorities.
The current plan follows a joint proposal submitted by the 11 local authorities in the area, including Watford Council, in November 2025. These councils are suggesting that the county should move away from the current setup where the county council and district councils share responsibilities.
Under the new system, a single council would take over all local services such as bin collections, planning, social care, and road repairs. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is looking at options to create either two, three, or four of these all-in-one councils.
This seven-week consultation first opened on 5 February 2026 as part of a move to make local government simpler and more efficient. According to Hertfordshire County Council, the government is expected to review all public comments before making a final decision in the summer of 2026.
Residents can still submit their opinions through the official Shaping Hertfordshire’s Future website before the window closes. This is the final opportunity for the community to influence how local services like housing and community support will be managed for years to come.
