Construction will begin in York, North Yorkshire, during the summer of 2026 to transform the Castle car park into a new public parkland. The project will change the historic site into a pedestrian-friendly green space that connects Clifford’s Tower with the Eye of York.

The City of York Council Planning Committee approved the revised plans for the site on 11 December 2025. This work will involve removing the current general car park to make way for new lawns, seating, and play areas for the community.

While general parking is being removed, 30 parking spaces will be kept for blue badge holders to help people with limited mobility access the area. The project is part of a larger plan to improve the city centre by reducing traffic and creating better public spaces for residents.

The new design aims to highlight the history of the location, including the 1190 massacre and the medieval fortifications. It will also focus on the area where the Ouse and Foss rivers meet, with input from the York Museums Trust and English Heritage.

Major construction activity is expected to alter local routes and parking access starting this summer. Landscape designers from BDP have shaped the plans to create a more inclusive environment that celebrates the heritage of the city.
