Residents in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, are being warned of extremely busy trains if they plan to travel to or from London on Sunday, 15 March 2026. East Midlands Railway says its services will be under significant pressure throughout the day.
The crowding is caused by major engineering work being carried out by Network Rail to install digital signalling upgrades. This work has closed the line between London King’s Cross and Peterborough, forcing many passengers from other routes onto trains that stop at Wellingborough.
A queuing system will be put in place at London St Pancras station to manage the large numbers of people. The train operator has warned that there may be standing room only on many services and passengers should allow plenty of extra time for their journeys.
Philippa Cresswell, the customer experience director at the train company, is asking people to consider travelling on a different day if possible. Passengers who usually travel on the closed route are being told to use Thameslink and a replacement bus service between Bedford and Peterborough instead of boarding the already busy trains.
