Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, residents are being asked for their views on a new proposal to introduce a 20mph speed limit across the town centre. The plan aims to make the streets safer by reducing road injuries and making it easier for people to walk, cycle, or use scooters in the area.

Surrey County Council initiative would cover several major routes, including the High Street, Ashley Road, New Zealand Avenue, and Churchfield Road. Leaders hope the lower speed limit will specifically help protect children, the elderly, and other vulnerable people moving through the busy shopping streets.

This proposed change would be a sign-only zone, which means there are no plans to install physical speed bumps at this stage. The council expects the limit to be self-enforcing, though they have noted that more traffic-calming measures could be added later if vehicle speeds do not drop as expected.

The project is being funded through a dedicated transport budget that is separate from the money used for general road maintenance such as repairing potholes. While the plan is being led by the county, councillors from Elmbridge Borough Council have also expressed support for the safety changes in the town.

Local shoppers and residents have until 27 March 2026 to take part in the public consultation and share their feedback on the proposals. This review is part of a larger effort by the council to look at speed limits in several different towns across the region this year.
