People in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, will see their walking and cycling hub in the Cleveland Centre close permanently on 31 March 2026 due to changes in regional funding. The closure marks the end of the facility’s role in providing bike repairs and transport support to the local community since it opened three years ago.

The Tees Valley Combined Authority confirmed the decision after a review of how it supports travel across the area. Officials stated the review was necessary to ensure that future programmes for walking and cycling are sustainable and offer good value for money.

While the Middlesbrough hub is shutting down for good, other hubs in Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington, and Redcar & Cleveland will only close for a short time on the same date. The authority is currently working to find a new operator to take over those locations and expects them to reopen later in the year.

The Middlesbrough hub first opened in 2023 to provide residents with secure bike parking, maintenance courses, and health-focused activities. The authority has stated that the current review will help reshape the way active travel services are delivered to the region in the future.
