The Borough of Broxbourne Council in Hertfordshire has confirmed that the Home Office will stop using the Delta Marriott Hotel in Cheshunt to house asylum seekers from the middle of June 2026. This decision follows years of pressure from local officials who wanted the building to return to its original use as a commercial hotel for the community.
The council has formally opposed the use of the hotel for housing asylum seekers since the arrangement first began in December 2022. Local leaders argued that the move removed a vital asset from the area and placed extra pressure on local public services over the last three years.
To push for this change, the council used several different methods including seeking legal advice and writing directly to the government. Councillor Corina Gander, the Leader of the Council, also hand-delivered a letter to the Prime Minister at Downing Street to highlight the concerns of residents in Cheshunt.
According to the Borough of Broxbourne Council, officials also served legal planning notices to the hotel owners. These notices were part of a plan to take enforcement action against the site for changing its use without the proper permissions, which eventually led to the Home Office agreeing to vacate the premises this summer.
