The City of Wolverhampton Council has finished energy-saving improvements on more than 600 council houses in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, to help residents stay warm and lower their heating bills. This work is part of a plan to modernise older buildings and make them more environmentally friendly for the community.

The upgrades focus on houses built with older methods that often struggle to keep heat in. These improvements include fitting new external wall insulation, installing double-glazed windows, and adding thicker loft insulation to keep rooms warmer during the winter months.

Teams also replaced front and back doors, fixed ventilation systems, and put on new roofs where needed. These changes are designed to stop long-standing issues with damp and cold that can affect older properties in the city.

The programme is run by Wolverhampton Homes on behalf of the local authority. The project is funded through government grants, including the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, to ensure the work does not put a strain on local budgets.

Councillor Steve Evans, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for City Housing, confirmed that the improvements help the city work towards its “Our Net Zero City” goal of reaching net-zero carbon status by 2041. The council stated that these changes offer immediate help to tenants by reducing the amount of energy needed to heat their homes.
