Durham County Council is hosting free family activities across County Durham on 20 March 2026 to celebrate the heritage and community spirit of the local area for County Durham Day.

Local libraries will put on special displays featuring history books and literature written by regional authors. Younger residents can also get involved by taking part in LEGO club challenges held at library branches throughout the day.

Several iconic buildings, including Durham Town Hall and The Story, will be lit up in blue and yellow to match the official colours of the county flag. These light displays are intended to highlight the region’s landmarks as part of the celebrations.

Members of the community can also join free spotlight tours at the cultural hub, which brings together archives and community spaces. This annual celebration is designed to focus on the unique history of the historic county.
