Hertfordshire County Council highways teams have started their annual roadside grass cutting across the county, including Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, during the week of 16 March 2026. This work is meant to make sure drivers can see clearly at junctions and that people can walk safely along the roads during the spring and summer months.

Hertfordshire County Council is spending more money on the programme this year to address both public safety and the way the grass looks. This extra funding comes after local people expressed that they care deeply about the appearance of the green spaces near their homes.

The maintenance work covers about 13 million square metres of grass along the roadsides. The responsibility for this massive task is split evenly between the county council and local district or borough councils, who manage half of the area on the county’s behalf.

Each round of cutting typically takes about four weeks to complete, but the timing can change depending on the weather. While safety is the main goal, the council is also leaving some areas uncut for longer to help protect wildflowers and support local nature.

According to Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst OBE, the Executive Member for Highways and Transport, the council knows that the appearance of these roadside areas is important to the community. The increased investment for 2026 aims to keep the county looking tidy while ensuring the roads remain safe for everyone to use.
