The North East Combined Authority has approved £27 million in funding this March 2026 to transform a site in Durham city centre, County Durham, into a new business and technology hub. This investment will create the Durham Innovation District, a project designed to bring high-quality jobs to the area and help university graduates find work in the region.

Work will take place at the Aykley Heads site, which is where Durham County Hall is currently located. The council is getting ready to move out of the building so the land can be turned into modern workspaces for innovative companies.

This project is a joint effort between Durham University, Durham County Council, and an urban regeneration developer called Muse. They want to use the university’s research to help local businesses grow and make sure residents have access to the best opportunities.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness announced the funding and said the plan is about keeping talented people in the North East. Professor Karen O’Brien and Councillor Andrew Husband also expressed their support for the development, which they believe will act as a major boost for the local economy.
