A free cycling festival called Spring Onto Your Bike! is coming to St Nicholas Square in Colchester on Saturday 28 March 2026. The event runs from 10am to 2pm and aims to help residents, workers, and visitors get back into cycling as the warmer weather arrives.

Colchester City Council is running the day alongside several local groups. Visitors can meet teams from the charity Re-Cycle, the Colchester Cycling Campaign, Cycle Colchester, and Kidical Mass to get advice on local routes and riding.

The event includes free Dr Bike safety checks for those who need help with punctures, brakes, or gear adjustments, though visitors are encouraged to pre-book their slots online. Owners can also get their bikes security marked for free by Essex Police to help stop theft. For those without a bike, Re-Cycle will be selling quality refurbished cycles for adults and children at affordable prices.

This is the first major spring cycling event at the square since its £1.6 million makeover was finished in July 2025. The council is also showcasing the Colchester eCargo bike library and the Essex Pedal Power scheme. Residents can also learn about the 100 electric bikes available to hire across the city through the Dott (formerly TIER) scheme.
