Roadworks to improve the surface and drainage at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, began on 23 March 2026 and are expected to last for eight weeks. The project on Mayhill Road is being led by the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to ensure better long-term access for patients, staff, and visitors.

During the work, parts of Mayhill Road will be restricted to one-way traffic, and drivers should expect to see temporary traffic lights in place. The construction will be carried out in six different stages, with most parts taking about one to two weeks to finish and the final section expected to take only a few days.

The Gloucestershire Managed Services team is overseeing the project and has confirmed that access to all hospital buildings and car parks will be maintained. While the site remains open, motorists are being told that routes around the hospital might change at short notice as the work moves along the road.

These improvements are taking place at the same time as a separate project on Claremont Road, which has been closed since January and is not expected to reopen until 14 August 2026. That project involves upgrading the hospital’s electrical systems and backup power generators as part of a wider ten-year plan to improve the local health facilities.
