Work will begin in April 2026 on a major project to modernise the fitness changing rooms at Clacton Leisure Centre in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. The project aims to provide up-to-date facilities for local people and support healthier lifestyles in the community.
Tendring District Council has hired Re-Gen (UK) Construction Ltd to carry out the overhaul. The work will focus on the first-floor fitness changing area, including the toilets and showers, which are currently out of use and expected to take around 18 weeks to complete.
This update is part of a wider £20 million plan to improve the town and nearby Jaywick Sands. The funding is provided through a partnership between the council and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Other improvements are already happening at the Vista Road site, such as a £1.36 million project to install solar panels and a new eco-friendly heating system. Future plans also include a new Ride and Play Zone which will feature areas for cycling and climbing at the centre.
Councillor Mick Barry said the new changing rooms will be a welcome change for the regular users of the popular fitness centre. The council hopes these investments will eventually turn the site into an Active Wellbeing Centre that offers sports and health services under one roof.
