The Museum of Watford is hosting a free history session for children under five and their parents in West Watford, Hertfordshire, on 22 April 2026. The interactive morning will take place from 9:30am to 11:00am at the West Watford Community Centre. Families can drop in without booking to take part in storytelling, movement exercises, and looking at real objects from the museum collection.
This session is part of the “Museum on Tour” programme, which brings heritage experiences directly into local neighbourhoods. The programme was started in October 2023 to keep the public involved while the museum moves from its old home on the Lower High Street to Watford Town Hall. This major move and transformation is being supported by more than £2.4 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The museum is working with the West Watford Community Association to host the event. The association is a local charity that has been serving the community from its base in a converted corner shop since 1973. Providing local activities for young families is a priority for the group and the museum as the town’s population continues to change.
According to the Census 2021, the number of children aged under 15 in Watford has increased by 14.5 per cent. This growth has made accessible community events more important for the town’s diverse population. The museum is expected to fully reopen at its new Town Hall location between 2026 and 2027.
