Cheshire Police have released security camera footage of a man they want to speak with following a deliberate fire at Macclesfield Football Club in Cheshire on 3 March 2026. The incident took place at around 1:15am at the Moss Rose stadium on London Road, where someone entered the grounds and set fire to two portable toilets.
According to Cheshire Police, the man shown in the footage was seen in the area at the time of the fire. PC Kate Simmons has urged anyone who recognises the man or has any information about the incident to contact the police using the reference number IML-2281364.
The current Macclesfield FC was established in October 2020 by local businessman Robert Smethurst after the town’s previous football club was closed down due to large debts. Since being reformed, the club has grown into a major community hub that features a gym, a bar, and an artificial grass pitch used by local people.
The club made national headlines in January 2026 when they defeated Premier League side Crystal Palace in the FA Cup. Led by manager John Rooney, the team was sitting in ninth place in the National League North table at the time the fire was started.
The Moss Rose stadium is one of the oldest football grounds in the country, having been built in 1891. It currently has enough space to hold around 4,720 fans for home matches.
