Essex County Council has corrected a road marking mistake at the Waterside Farm roundabout on the A130 Canvey Way in Canvey Island, Essex. The error occurred when arrows were repainted incorrectly, forcing drivers in the left lane to turn toward Benfleet instead of allowing them to continue straight toward Somnes Avenue.

According to Essex Highways, the markings should have maintained the original traffic flow. Residents reported that the change caused significant confusion and cut the capacity for vehicles entering the island by half.

The local Member of Parliament, Dame Rebecca Harris, stepped in to demand an immediate fix after several motorists reported near-miss accidents. Work crews returned to the site to repaint the correct arrows on the night of 26 March 2024.

The mix-up has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the fact that the island only has two road access points for its 38,000 residents. Many locals continue to call for a third road to be built to improve safety and reduce daily congestion at this busy junction.
