Four graduates from the University of Northampton in Northamptonshire have secured £30,000 in government funding to launch their own independent video game studio. The team, known as Mothlight Studio, received the money after completing a national training programme and a month-long residency in Dundee to develop their new game, Showrunners.

The team created a fast-paced roller-skating game where players compete in a fictional televised competition. A playable version of the game is expected to be released shortly, with a full release on the online store Steam planned for 2027.

This funding was awarded through a national project called Tranzfuser and a development residency known as DunDev. These programmes are run by the UK Games Fund, which helps university graduates turn their projects into professional businesses.

Led by founder Ben Green, the five-member team includes specialists in art, design, and computer programming. The achievement allows the graduates to build their own company in the local area instead of seeking standard employment after finishing their degrees.

Research into these government grants shows they provide a strong return on investment, generating nearly five pounds for the economy for every pound spent. The funding is part of a larger national effort to support creative industries and help new talent enter the gaming market.
