Patients and visitors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, will need to use a different door this weekend while the Windy Nook entrance is closed for urgent maintenance work.

The Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the entrance on Windy Nook Road will be shut on Saturday 28 March and Sunday 29 March 2026. Anyone arriving for appointments or visiting loved ones must use the main entrance located near the Emergency Department instead.

According to hospital maps, the Windy Nook entrance is usually the quickest way to reach the maternity unit and the main dining area, which is known as The Hub. People who usually park in Car Parks 2 and 3 should plan for a slightly longer walk to reach the alternative doors on the other side of the building.

The hospital is also currently managing cases of norovirus in some wards. Staff are asking people not to visit if they have had symptoms like vomiting,  diarrhoea or flu like symptoms in the last 48 hours to help stop the bug from spreading to vulnerable patients.

Located in the Sheriff Hill area, the hospital has served the local community since it was opened by the Queen Mother in 1948. The Trust has apologised for any inconvenience the maintenance work may cause to families over the weekend.
