Local community groups and organisations in York and across North Yorkshire now have a final opportunity to apply for a share of a £2.75 million fund designed to boost physical activity and wellbeing. The Movement, Activity and Sport Investment Programme is offering grants ranging from £3,000 to £49,999 for capital projects and up to £30,000 for revenue projects to support initiatives that encourage people to get moving at any stage of life.

The second and final round of this funding programme opens for applications on 1 April 2026 and will remain open until 26 May 2026. This initiative is managed by North Yorkshire Sport on behalf of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. The fund aims to address the significant challenge of physical inactivity, with current figures showing that more than 30 per cent of adults in the region are classed as physically inactive.

Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith launched the programme as part of a wider effort to improve regional health. Mayor Skaith has noted that sport has played a vital role in his own life, and he hopes these investments will provide more residents with the same opportunities to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Research indicates that every £1 invested in sport and physical activity can generate roughly £4 in return by strengthening community wellbeing and the economy.

Applications are open to both sports clubs and non-sport organisations for revenue, capital, and workforce-focused projects. To be eligible, proposals must aim to benefit at least one of four key priority groups: residents in rural communities, disabled people or those requiring inclusive activities, women and girls, or individuals who could benefit from early health intervention.

This programme follows a successful first round of funding which saw approximately £1 million distributed across 49 local projects. Assistance and guidance for those interested in applying can be found through York CVS. Decisions regarding the final round of funding are expected to be communicated to applicants in July 2026.
