A new central bus stop with an eco-friendly living roof has been installed in Fleet, Hampshire. While the structure is now in place, final preparations and commissioning are currently underway before it becomes fully operational for residents.

This installation is part of a wider effort by Hampshire County Council to improve public transport across the region. In a 10-year partnership with Clear Channel UK, the council is upgrading 151 bus shelters in Hart, Rushmoor, and Gosport. Of these, 36 are designed as living roofs, which are also known as bee bus stops.

These shelters are topped with native wildflowers and sedum to help support local pollinators and reduce urban heat. The living roof shelters are funded through advertising revenue from Clear Channel, while the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) supports broader bus improvements across Hampshire.

Councillor Steve Forster, Hampshire County Councillor for Fleet Town and Hart District Councillor for Fleet West, noted that the installation is nearly finished. The broader programme, which includes over £50 million in investment over four years, is part of a long-term goal to double the number of bus passenger journeys across the county by 2035. This work is supported by a grant from the Department for Transport.
