Residents in Beeston, Carlton, and Toton can now support local food banks more easily through new pre-packed essential item bags available at local Tesco stores. This initiative, which runs through the Easter period, allows shoppers to purchase bags filled with long-life food items for between £2 and £5, which are then donated directly to those in need.

The programme is part of a long-standing partnership between Tesco and the Trussell Trust, which has been in place since 2012. These donation bags are available at large stores serving the area, including the Tesco Extra at Swiney Way in Toton and the Tesco Superstore on Carlton Hill in Carlton.

The need for such support remains high, with the Trussell Trust reporting that food bank usage across the country is 45 per cent higher than it was in 2019. During 2025, food banks in the network provided the equivalent of one emergency food parcel every 12 seconds. Data also shows that families with children are particularly affected, as they received nearly two-thirds of all emergency food parcels distributed last year.

Locally, the effort to combat food insecurity is a primary focus of the Nottinghamshire Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2022-2026, which brings together the NHS and local authorities. In Beeston, the East & West Nottingham Foodbank continues to serve the community, having distributed 5,629 three-day emergency food supplies last year alone. Additionally, Broxtowe Community Projects, located at 32 Chilwell High Road, operates a local food and nappy bank and has received £9,300 in council funding to help manage its distribution schemes and volunteer costs.

Alongside these donations, the supermarket giant continues to work with the food redistribution charity FareShare to provide surplus food to local community groups.
