A 36-year-old man has been jailed for six months following a series of thefts from shops in Telford. Jonathan Beatty-Thomas, who has no fixed abode, was sentenced at Telford Magistrates Court on 24 March 2026 after pleading guilty to multiple charges.

The court heard that between February and March 2026, Beatty-Thomas stole a total of £322 worth of goods from various stores. This included £19 of clothing from the British Heart Foundation in the Telford Centre, along with a £99 coat from Marks and Spencer and £65 of fragrances from Boots. In addition to the theft charges, he pleaded guilty to criminal damage regarding a salon window in Wellington and four breaches of a legal order known as a Criminal Behaviour Order, which had previously banned him from entering the Telford Centre.

Sergeant Rich Jones of West Mercia Police, who leads a team dedicated to tackling retail crime, welcomed the sentencing. He noted that while all shoplifting causes harm, targeting a charity shop is particularly unacceptable because these organisations rely on public donations to support vulnerable people. According to Telford crime statistics, shoplifting reports in the area currently occur at a rate of 11 per 1,000 people, which is higher than the national average.
