The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for strong winds across Sunderland this Easter weekend. The warning is in effect from 6pm on Saturday 4 April until midday on Sunday 5 April 2026.

Residents should prepare for wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph across the area, with speeds potentially reaching 60 to 70 mph in more exposed coastal locations. The alert, which was issued on Wednesday 1 April, warns of a risk of travel disruption, property damage, and possible injury.

The severe weather is caused by a rapidly deepening area of low pressure moving northeast toward the UK. According to Dan Holley, the deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, the system is being driven by a cold air mass from Canada that is strengthening the jet stream. This weather event is expected to clear toward the North Sea by Sunday.

Travelers are advised to remain cautious, as this holiday period is predicted to be the busiest for travel in four years. Delays are likely for road, rail, air, and ferry services, with the possibility of bridge closures and service cancellations. High-sided vehicles should be especially prepared for delays on exposed routes.

There is also a slight chance of power cuts that could affect energy supplies and mobile phone coverage, as well as damage to buildings, such as tiles being blown from roofs. Coastal residents should be aware of potential injuries caused by large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.
