Residents across York will have the chance to explore local creativity this month as York Open Studios returns for its 25th year. The popular event takes place over two weekends, 18-19 April and 25-26 April 2026, with studios open to the public from 10am to 5pm each day.
This year’s programme is the largest in the event’s history, featuring more than 160 artists across over 100 venues throughout the city. The initiative, which is supported by Welcome to Yorkshire, is a non-profit effort that showcases the work of creators living or working within a ten-mile radius of the city. Attendees can visit these workspaces for free to view and purchase original pieces directly from the artists, with a variety of styles on offer including ceramics, textiles, photography, glass, sculpture, and painting.
First established in 2002 by founders Anne Hutchison and Gail Fox with 19 other exhibitors, the event has grown significantly into a major fixture on the local cultural calendar. Visitors looking to plan their route can access an interactive map on the event website, or pick up a free printed directory from tourist hubs and arts locations across York.
Many familiar faces are set to participate in the 2026 edition, including fine art printmaker Jane Duke, stained-glass artist Helen Bower, and sculptor and ceramist Tim Pearce. The event continues its tradition of connecting the community with contemporary local art, providing an opportunity for residents to meet the makers and discover works suited to all budgets and tastes.
