Reform UK Southampton has announced it will field candidates in all 17 wards for the upcoming local elections on 7 May 2026, marking the party’s first coordinated citywide campaign in the area.

The move represents a significant expansion for the party, which currently holds one seat on the Southampton City Council. That seat is held by Sarah Powell-Vaughan, who represents the Sholing ward after defecting from the Conservative Party in February 2026.

Voters across the city will be heading to the polls to elect 18 of the council’s 51 members. This includes one regular seat in each of the 17 wards, along with a special by-election in the Shirley ward. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former councillor George Percival, who stepped down in January 2026 due to a relocation for work.

The May contest takes place against the backdrop of significant changes for the local authority. Due to government-led local council reorganisation, this will be the final election held under the current structure before the city council is replaced by a new unitary authority in 2027 or 2028.

John Edwards, chairman of Reform UK Southampton, has stated that the party intends to challenge the current Labour-run leadership, led by Council Leader Alex Winning. Mr. Edwards has raised concerns regarding the management of housing stock in the city and has spoken out against increases in parking permit prices.

The party’s presence in local politics follows a debut showing in the Shirley by-election in February 2026, where Reform UK secured 19 per cent of the vote, finishing behind the Liberal Democrats and Labour.
