Work has officially begun to transform the former Homebase site at Team Valley Retail World in Gateshead into a new Home Bargains store. Construction crews arrived in late March 2026 to begin gutting and renovating the large unit, which has sat empty since the previous DIY retailer closed in February 2025.

This development marks the arrival of the third Home Bargains location in the borough, with existing shops already serving customers on the High Street and at the Blaydon Shopping Centre. The site at Team Valley is part of a wider national expansion for the company, which currently operates over 600 stores across the United Kingdom.

As part of the preparations for the new shop, the company submitted an application to Gateshead Council on 27 February 2026. This request seeks permission for the store to sell alcohol between the hours of 6am and midnight, seven days a week.

The unit at Team Valley has seen significant changes in recent years. After being earmarked for potential closure in 2018, it remained open for several years before finally shutting its doors following the company’s entry into administration. The arrival of Home Bargains is expected to bring new life to the prominent retail space in Gateshead.
