Storm Dave is set to bring very strong winds to Sunderland this weekend, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for wind. The warning is in effect from 5pm on Saturday 4 April until 7am on Sunday 5 April.

Residents should expect winds to reach speeds of 50-60 mph throughout the area, with even stronger gusts of 60-70 mph possible in exposed coastal locations. The storm is expected to cross Scotland on Saturday night before moving into the North Sea on Sunday morning.

Coastal areas, including Roker, are likely to see large waves as a result of the high winds. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has previously warned that such conditions can create dangerous, surging waves that may catch people unaware along the shore.

The RAC has advised that travel conditions across the north of the UK will be challenging. Drivers are encouraged to take extra care on exposed routes and remain cautious when overtaking high-sided vehicles, as these can be particularly affected by strong gusts.

Sunderland City Council has emergency procedures in place to manage any issues caused by the weather. Residents should call 999 if they encounter a genuine emergency, or contact the council on 0191 520 5555 for further information during the storm.
