A 22-year-old man from Middlesbrough has been ordered to pay £811 after being caught on camera dumping a sofa on a grassed area at Miniott Walk in Hemlington. Tyler Belton, of Myton Walk, admitted to the offence at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on 2 April 2026.
The incident, which took place in August 2025, was identified by a Middlesbrough Council environment enforcement officer after the dumped item was discovered the following day. Council investigators used nearby footage from a security camera to identify the individual responsible. Following the incident, the local authority’s fly-tipping squad removed the furniture.
Mr Belton was arrested ahead of the court hearing after failing to attend scheduled interviews with the council last September. In court, his sentence included a £120 fine and a £48 victim surcharge, alongside £643 in council costs.
Councillor Ian Blades, the executive member for neighbourhoods, stated that the outcome serves as a warning that those who dump waste will face significant financial penalties and a criminal record. The council has recently taken a tougher stance on environmental crime, increasing fixed penalty fines for fly-tipping by 150 per cent to £1,000.
Local figures show that Middlesbrough received nearly 6,500 reports of fly-tipping over the past year. Nationally, incidents of illegal dumping across England rose by 9 per cent to 1.26 million during the 2024/25 period, according to government statistics.
