A Colchester man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after admitting to a string of 33 shop thefts and repeatedly ignoring a court order meant to keep him out of local stores. Daniel Jones, 38, of Spruce Avenue, was caught following an investigation by the Colchester Neighbourhood Policing Team under Essex Police’s Operation Valuable, an initiative aimed at curbing persistent retail crime.
The court proceedings at Chelmsford Crown Court on 30 March 2026 confirmed that Jones stole goods valued at £2,926.73 from shops over a nine-month period. His spree began on 12 April 2025, when he took £187 worth of Easter eggs and cakes from a store in Witham, and concluded on 31 January 2026, with the theft of coffee and meat from a shop in Greenstead. Throughout this time, Jones breached a criminal behaviour order 31 times, which had explicitly banned him from entering all Co-op stores in Essex.
Police eventually located Jones on 6 February 2026 during a raid on his home, where officers discovered him hiding inside the base of a divan bed. His 18-month sentence includes 12 months for the recent thefts and order breaches, as well as the activation of a six-month suspended sentence for previous criminal activity.
Operation Valuable, which launched in June 2025, uses a combination of high-visibility patrols, plain-clothes officers, and close cooperation with shop staff to identify and charge offenders. The force has reported an increase in its ability to resolve retail crimes, noting that it solved 1,627 more shoplifting offences in the year ending 31 August 2025 compared to the previous period. Local residents can expect these targeted enforcement actions to continue in an effort to reduce shoplifting across the community.
