A major fire has completely destroyed the derelict former Sherwood Hotel on Belgrave Road in Torquay, marking the second time in three days that emergency crews have been called to the building. The incident on 5 April 2026 prompted a large-scale response from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, which confirmed the blaze was started deliberately.

Approximately 90 personnel from 14 fire stations, including crews from Torquay, Paignton, and surrounding areas, worked to bring the fire under control. The three-storey structure was deemed unsafe and suffered a total roof collapse during the operation. To manage the scene, Devon and Cornwall Police closed Belgrave Road in both directions between Falkland Road and A379 Torbay Road.

Residents living near the Tormohun area were advised to keep windows and doors closed to avoid health issues caused by the large amount of smoke produced by the fire. The building has a long history of police intervention, having been closed for three months in October 2025 due to reports of anti-social behaviour.

Authorities are now investigating the incident and have asked for the public’s help. Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or who has CCTV or doorbell camera footage of the area is asked to contact the police on 101, quoting log number 348 of 05/04/2026.
