Residents in Gateshead can explore the local wildlife this weekend as the Friends of Saltwell Park host their annual Spring Bird Walk on Sunday 12 April 2026. Starting at 10am by the park lake, the two-hour guided session offers a chance to see a variety of birds during the spring season.

Ornithologist Michael Turner will lead the group through the grounds of the 55-acre Victorian park. Participants can look out for more than 70 species of birds that have been recorded in the area, including residents like robins and blue tits, as well as wildfowl such as mute swans, mallards, and great crested grebes often found on the four-acre lake.

The event is part of a special year for the community, as Saltwell Park celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2026. Since opening in 1876 as The People’s Park, the site has remained a central green space for the area, recently earning Green Heritage Site Accreditation alongside the long-standing Green Flag Award.

Attendance costs £1 for members of the Friends group and £2 for non-members, with payment accepted by cash or bank transfer on the day. Those interested in joining the walk must register in advance by emailing [email protected].
