Residents in Sunderland are waking up to significantly cooler conditions this morning, 10 April 2026, as temperatures have dropped sharply following an unusually warm mid-week spell.

After reaching a peak of 19.8°C on Wednesday 8 April, the city has seen a temperature fall of approximately 15-16°C. According to the Met Office, temperatures in the early hours of Friday morning were recorded between 3°C and 4°C, a stark contrast to the unseasonable warmth experienced earlier in the week.

The North East England regional forecast warns of a chilly start to the day with the potential for frost, although residents can expect bright spells throughout the morning. While the morning remains dry with very good visibility, moderate westerly winds of 11-15mph have been recorded, with gusts reaching 29mph.

The recent warm spell, which saw temperatures across parts of the UK climb as high as 26°C, was described by the national weather service as the warmest period at this point in April since 2020. Officials noted that such high temperatures for early April are uncommon and were driven by southerly winds drawing warm air northwards.

For the remainder of Friday, forecasters anticipate that cloud will thicken as the day progresses, with a maximum temperature of 12°C expected for the region.
