A group dedicated to connecting women with the outdoors is hosting a social walk and campfire event at the Summer Leys nature reserve in Wellingborough on Sunday 12 April 2026. Running from 10:30am to 12:30pm, the event invites participants to take a guided stroll around the reserve before gathering at a private education area to toast marshmallows.

The session is organised by Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire as part of its Northants Nature Girls programme. Launched in February 2024 by Communities and Education Officer Megan Owen, the initiative aims to combat social isolation and address safety concerns that can act as barriers for women enjoying nature alone. While the group primarily focuses on women in their 20s and 30s, all adults are welcome to join.

The walk covers approximately two miles along flat, mostly gravel paths, making it accessible for people of all ability levels. The 47-hectare Summer Leys site, a former gravel pit that is now an internationally important refuge for breeding and wading birds, serves as a natural backdrop for the social gathering.

Tickets for the event cost £7.50 for non-members and £5 for Wildlife Trust BCN members. Attendees should note that parking charges at the reserve are £4 for up to four hours or £6 for a full day. Members of the Trust can park for free, provided they register their vehicle number two to three business days in advance.

The Northants Nature Girls group has seen significant interest since its inception, with previous events, including its launch, selling out within days. Interested participants can find more information about the event on the Wildlife Trust BCN website.
