A major investment in Sunderland is set to change the look of the local housing landscape as Gentoo Group begins rolling out a new fleet of more than 320 vans. Announced on 7 April 2026, the project aims to improve maintenance and repair services for the housing association’s residents across the city.
The updated fleet is designed to be both smarter and greener, supporting the organisation’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. As part of this push toward sustainability, 10% of the new vehicles are fully electric. This shift aligns with the goals of Sunderland City Council, which is working toward making the city carbon neutral by 2040.
For the staff who provide maintenance and care for the housing association’s approximately 28,000 to 30,000 properties, the new vans include significant upgrades to their mobile workplaces. These improvements feature air-conditioning and smarter storage solutions, which the housing provider says will help support safer and more comfortable journeys during their daily rounds.
The fleet upgrade was delivered through a partnership involving Volkswagen Financial Services, QI Van Systems, and Sherwoods Motor Group. QI Van Systems, a specialist company based in Telford, used its industry experience to handle the design and conversion of the vans to meet specific maintenance needs.
