The Huddersfield Civic Society has announced a guided evening walk through the Lindley and upper Birkby districts on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, to showcase the town’s unique Arts and Crafts architectural heritage. Running from 7pm to 9pm, the tour will explore what the society describes as the area’s richest concentration of houses built in this distinctive style.
Local historian David Griffiths, a prominent member of the Huddersfield Local History Society, will lead the walk. Mr. Griffiths is the author of the recently published book, Huddersfield’s Arts & Crafts Houses: From Edgar Wood to the 1930s. The event follows the themes of his research, which documents the strong tradition of domestic architecture in the region rooted in Pennine vernacular styles between the 1880s and the 1930s.
Participants will assemble at 7pm in the front garden of Briarcourt, located at 28 Occupation Road. Designed by the influential architect Edgar Wood in 1894-5, the house is a Grade II listed building originally commissioned as a wedding gift for the architect’s sister and brother-in-law. The route will take walkers along various pavements and paths, ending around 9pm after traveling up Daisy Lea Lane toward the local recreation ground and the landmark Lindley Clock Tower.
There are 20 places available for the walk, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority is given to members of the Huddersfield Civic Society, who may book for themselves and up to one guest. The event is free for members, while non-members may attend for a fee of £5. Those wishing to join the tour should book their place by emailing the society’s secretary, Geoff Hughes.
The society, which was established in 1964 to protect local heritage and guide future development, notes that while there are pubs near the starting point, there are no public toilets available at the site. For those interested in supporting the society’s ongoing work, annual membership fees are available for individuals, couples, and corporate groups.
