Residents in Peterborough are being urged to register for the new garden waste collection service, as the current scheme concludes with its final round of collections during the week of 24 April 2026.
Peterborough City Council has launched a completely new subscription system for the 2026/2027 period, meaning all households must sign up again to ensure their brown bin collections continue from 27 April 2026 through to 23 April 2027. The service, which is delivered by the council-owned trading company Aragon Direct Services, remains priced at £58 per year for one bin or £89.50 for two bins.
While the new system is currently live, technical difficulties have impacted the sign-up process. Residents can only pay via the annual online payment option at this time. Plans to offer phone-based registrations and a new monthly payment option, which were intended to be available from 15 April 2026, have been delayed due to these technical issues. The council has apologised for the inconvenience and is advising residents to check its website for updates regarding when these alternative methods will be operational.
This requirement to re-register applies to all residents, including those who may have had automatic payment arrangements in place previously. Under the new system, the monthly payment option will replace the former direct debit scheme, and residents will be able to manage their preference for recurring annual payments directly through their online account.
The garden waste collection service is an optional subscription that is currently used by approximately 30% of households in the city. The service was introduced by the council three years ago as part of efforts to manage costs for discretionary services, which previously required an annual spend of approximately £800,000.
