Newport Community Library in Shropshire is set for a major internal makeover after securing £235,971 in funding to modernise the facility for the first time in over 25 years.

The project, which aims to improve the building for the library’s 1,500 regular users, was made possible after Newport Town Council and Telford & Wrekin Council successfully bid for support from the Libraries Improvement Fund. This fund is managed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Arts Council England.

Planned upgrades include installing new windows and doors, updating the lighting and shelving, and putting in new ceiling tiles. The main library space, children’s area, and meeting room will also receive a full redecoration.

Newport Town Council, which has operated the library under a 100-year lease from Telford & Wrekin Council since 1 April 2024, will lead the delivery of the works. The town council is also providing additional local funding to ensure the project’s success. With more than 31,000 books borrowed over the past year, the library remains a vital resource for the area.

While some parts of the library may face temporary closures during the improvements, officials have stated that they will work to keep disruptions to a minimum. Alternative arrangements will be provided for users, and the public will be kept updated as the work progresses.
