Almost every child due to start primary school in Telford this September has been offered a place at one of their preferred schools, according to the latest figures from Telford & Wrekin Council.
Following National Offer Day on 16 April 2026, the local authority confirmed that 98% of the 2,087 applicants were allocated a spot at one of their chosen schools. Of those, 91%—or 1,906 children—secured their first-choice option. The council confirmed that every child who submitted an application before the January deadline was successfully allocated a school place.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, the Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, stated that the high placement success is a direct result of ongoing investment to expand school capacity across the borough. The council earmarked £45.2 million in its 2025/26 budget to support these expansions, ensuring that local children have access to modern facilities. Part of this effort includes the new Thomas Telford Primary Free School, which is set to open a permanent 420-place building this September after operating in temporary accommodation since last year.
To further support families with young children, the council continues to promote its 5 by 5 initiative. Launched last May, the programme provides various activities designed to help children prepare for the transition to primary education and ensure they are happy and ready for the school year.
Parents and carers can view their child’s school offer by logging in to the council’s online portal.
