The business group Totally Stockport has unveiled a new plan to bring more trees, plants, and green spaces to the town centre in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Published on 15 April 2026, the Urban Greening Masterplan is part of the organisation’s Going Green programme. It sets out a strategy to improve areas across the 80-hectare business improvement district, including Merseyway, the Underbanks, Chestergate, Market Place, St Peter’s Square, and Mersey Square.

The plan was developed by Layer.studio after consultations with local retailers and residents. It aims to make the town centre more walkable and attractive, with officials noting that adding greenery will help cool streets, clean the air, support wildlife, and improve daily wellbeing.

The initiative also focuses on boosting the local economy by encouraging visitors to spend more time in the town centre, which in turn supports local businesses. The project will combine immediate improvements, known as quick wins, with larger long-term goals.

While the masterplan itself cost £20,000 to develop, the budget for carrying out the immediate projects ranges between £150,000 and £400,000. This effort is part of a wider £1 billion regeneration programme currently underway in the town centre. This includes the recent conclusion of a £7 million investment in the Underbanks area and the start of a new sustainable neighbourhood development, Stockport 8, which is expected to begin construction later in 2026.
