A prolific shoplifter from Southampton has been jailed for four months and banned from entering major retail stores across Hampshire following a series of thefts. Robbie Jones, 31, of Butts Road, was sentenced at Southampton Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to 20 offences of shoplifting and breaching bail conditions committed between June 2025 and March 2026.
During his spree, Jones stole a variety of items, including alcohol, razor blades, chocolate, hair care products, and other drinks. In addition to his prison sentence, the court ordered him to pay £2,254 in compensation to his victims. He has also been issued a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order, which strictly prohibits him from entering any Co-op, Tesco, One Stop, or Boots stores throughout the county.
Under the conditions of this order, Jones is required to leave any other store he is permitted to enter if asked to do so by staff. Furthermore, he must keep any items he picks up while shopping clearly visible in a basket at all times.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has identified retail crime as a significant concern, noting that the threats and abuse faced by shop workers are unacceptable and impact the viability of local businesses. To combat these issues, the police have utilised the UK Partners Against Crime digital platform, which has assisted in securing charges against 131 offenders since its launch in June 2025.
Efforts to address the root causes of repeat offending are also expanding. A programme known as the Business Crime Navigator, which is being delivered in partnership with the charity The Society of St James and co-funded by GO! Southampton, is being rolled out in the city. The programme offers targeted support to individuals, with a trial in Portsmouth showing that 60 percent of participants reported a significant reduction in shoplifting and drug misuse.
