Two long-standing food traders in Northampton have been told to leave the town’s Market Square by 8pm this Friday, 24 April 2026. The decision by West Northamptonshire Council to evict the stalls, known as Ciro’s Place and Fryin’ Brian, follows notices served to the business owners on 21 April.

The council states the move is part of an effort to address reports of anti-social behaviour in the area and to review the overall mix of traders as it aims to improve the market space. Ciro’s Place has been a part of the market since 1997, marking 28 years of service to the community. Regarding the four-day deadline for departure, the council has confirmed the action is compliant with the temporary contracts held by the traders and stated that support has been offered to those affected.

The announcement has sparked public disagreement, with nearly 700 people signing a petition to oppose the decision. A protest is planned for the morning of 24 April, where over 100 people are expected to gather at the Market Square in support of the businesses.

Some local representatives and customers have questioned the council’s reasoning. Critics argue that individual businesses should not be held responsible for the behaviour of others and that the food vans are valued features of the local community. Labour councillor Enam Haque stated that anti-social behaviour should be managed by addressing the perpetrators directly, rather than by closing down businesses.
