Independent shops in Southampton are receiving free expert retail advice through a new 12-week programme launched by Southampton Solent University in partnership with GO! Southampton. The initiative, called Retail Remedies, aims to help local businesses improve their customer experience and better compete on the high street.

The programme will support up to 12 independent retailers in the city centre. Each participating shop receives 10 hours of specialist guidance, which includes an in-store diagnostic assessment, a bespoke retail improvement plan with practical actions, and a follow-up session to assist with making changes.

The work is led by Re:So, the university’s student-led retail and consultancy enterprise, under the guidance of senior lecturer Lesley Taylor. Students Kitty Gray and Louna Creouw-Potez have already begun working with the first group of five pilot businesses, which include Gallery Grounds and the Kadampa Meditation Centre.

For businesses that pay into the city’s Business Improvement District, the service is fully funded through the university’s innovation voucher scheme. Other local retailers can also access the consultancy support, with vouchers available to cover costs up to £5,000.
