Ipswich Town Women has appointed David Wright as the club’s permanent manager following a successful period as interim boss. The 45-year-old, who previously played for the club as a defender between 2007 and 2010, formally accepted the role on 24 April 2026 after helping the team move away from the bottom of the league table.
Wright initially took charge on 6 January 2026, replacing Joe Sheehan at a time when the team was struggling at the base of the Women’s Super League 2. Under his leadership, the squad saw a significant shift in form, securing 12 of their 17 total season points since the turn of the year. This improvement was supported by the arrival of Ipswich Town Women’s Technical Director Sean Burt, who oversaw the signing of nine new players during the January transfer window.
The team’s efforts culminated in recent back-to-back victories that guaranteed their place in the division for next season. This included a 4-1 win against Sheffield United on 22 April 2026, followed by a 3-0 victory over league leaders Birmingham City on 26 April 2026. The club now sits 10th in the table with 20 points, three points clear of of bottom club Portsmouth.
Regarding his appointment, Wright noted that he is honoured to continue in the role. He credited the hard work of the players and staff for the performances displayed since January. Before joining the women’s programme, Wright held various coaching positions, including roles at Maldon & Tiptree, Colchester United, and MK Dons, in addition to his previous academy work.
