Families in Rickmansworth have the chance to enjoy a nautical adventure this May half-term, as the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust brings back its popular Pirate Story Boats event. The activities are set to take place on Wednesday 27 May and Thursday 28 May 2026, offering children a day of themed fun along the Grand Union Canal.

The experience features a 40-minute boat trip aboard The Spirit of Batchworth, departing from the Batchworth Lock Canal Centre hourly between 10 AM and 4 PM. While children listen to a pirate-themed story and receive pirate hats, eye patches, and other loot, adults have the opportunity to relax. The fun continues on shore with a treasure hunt in the garden, complete with chocolate treats for the participants.

The event is designed for children aged between 2 and 11, though all children are welcome to attend. Babies under 12 months can join for free and do not require a booking. The Trust notes that children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Tickets are priced at £12 per child and £8 per adult. Because the event often reaches full capacity, the organisers urge families to book their spots in advance through the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust website.

The Batchworth Community Council continues to support these local events as part of its work to promote community engagement in the area. The Trust, which was founded in 1991 and received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2017, maintains the canal site as a heritage education charity.
